Producer confidence shown at Pig Fair

Pig producers still have confidence in the future of the British pig industry judging by the plans for re-investment in housing and equipment that will improve efficiency. That’s the feedback Quality Equipment received at the British Pig & Poultry Fair.

New Weaner House – Pig World

An hour a day – that’s all it takes for the day to day management of a new, state-of-the-art weaner house put up by a Suffolk farmer. The big investment has transformed the growth rate of his piglets, reduced mortality and made the difference between staying in pigs and getting out altogether.
He runs 250-260 sows on his 134ha farm producing porkers and cutters, finishing them at 60-75kg deadweight in straw yards, making use of home-grown grain and straw.

Chris Leamon's Slat Insert Story

A clever invention has saved an Essex pig farmer thousands of pounds, much hassle and enabled him to continue to produce pigs under the Red Tractor Farm Assurance scheme.

Chris Leamon runs a 320-sow herd on the family farm near Harlow. All the pigs are taken through to finishing at an average of 76kg deadweight and are liquid-fed using a variety of co-products. Slats are virtually a pre-requisite with wet feeding but wear and tear and the corrosive effects of some ingredients caused damage to the slats, enlarging the gaps.

Finishing weaners still offers a route for new entrants to get into the pig sector, and no one has done more than BQP to bring newcomers into the industry. It offers a proven contract that not only provides the opportunity for good financial returns, but is accepted by many lenders to support lending to build specialist finishing accommodation to operate the enterprise.

New Weaner Trolley

With sows producing more pigs per litter and farms getting larger, moving and handling weaners can become time consuming and stressful. In response to requests from pig farmers, Quality Equipment has produced a purpose made weaner trolley to hold piglets during such routine tasks as injecting, as well as for transporting weaners from the farrowing pens to the grower house.
